Recently, I’ve started to get a little worried about my work PC. Well, not worried about it, worried because of it. I have installed a few things since it became mine, many for work purposes, such as Outlook Redemption and Firefox, and others for more personal reasons, such as Feedreader and Firefox.
I began to wonder, as I am in no way a sysadmin, whether I was actually allowed to do such things. I went in search of an IT Policy. The first place I looked was the company intranet. But this is (to put it politely) a crock of shit. So I fell back on the Employee Handbook, the source of everything an employee could want to know (apparently). This is the opening paragraph of the section on IT:
“If your role involves the use of a computer, you have the responsibility to take appropriate measures to safeguard computer systems and information”
Well, upon reading that I decided that I was not only allowed to install Firefox, but it was my responsibility to do so, in the interest of ‘Safeguarding Computer Systems’. I’ve also taken the opportunity to install SP2, as it wasn’t already on my system. We shall see if anything comes of it…
