I bought a laptop last week
Specs for the Acer Aspire 5601:
- Intel Centrino Duo 1.6Ghz
- 15.4″ Widescreen with Clearview
- 80GB HD
- 1GB System Ram
- Integrated Intel Sound (Realtek 883)
- Integrated Intel Graphics (845 Chipset)
- Integrated Wireless (not sure what chipset)
I booted into WinXP first to make sure everything worked, and it did so I immediately wiped it off and installed Ubuntu. As far as I can tell, everything worked under Ubuntu out-of-the-box, apart from the sound and the integrated webcam. The webcam, I’m not too bothered atm, plus a bit of research indicates it’s not yet supported under Linux. The sound however is a major issue. It was (IMO) fairly easy to sort out, thanks to a google leading me to this page on the Ubuntu Forums. I basically had to download this file from alsa-project.org, extract it, and type the following:
cd alsa-driver-1.0.12rc3Restart, and boom! sound. Because the downloaded file is a realease candidate, it will hopefully be sorted out soon in the main Ubunut repositories.
./configure --with-cards=hda-intel
make
sudo make install
Lubbly Jubbly. Xgl also works, which is nice
Edit: I’ve upgraded to Edgy, and the sound works out of the box. Still no webcam though, and XGL/Compiz stopped working after a coupe of Days. I’ve switched to AIGLX/Beryl, but I get the same thing, expect a blog post about it soon.
Edit 2: Check the comments for other users tips on how to do ubuntu-y things with this type of laptop

Hey, how about the integrated card reader? Any luck there? I am running on Suse 10.1, same laptop but cannot use the card reader.
thanks
To be honest, I haven’t tried it. The only ‘thing’ I’ve got with a memory card is my Mobile Phone, which I plug in to the USB so that it charges up and I can access the phone’s internal memory as well as the card. I think I’ve an old SD Card somewhere I can try. I’ll have a look later.
you might like to visit this url as i have the same laptop and have done alot of work and research to get things working

Excellent! Thanks for that. It’s worth mentioning this page too:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AcerAspire5601AWLMi/HowTo
(It’s linked to from the one Quail posted above)
Keep an eye on the Howto page as i am updating as i find work arounds to getting things working, the web cam is a going to be a hard one as i am not a program, But i have been in contact with the developer that creates the drives for logitech web cams and still waiting for a reply to what he needs to create the drivers for the web cam to work. I am hoping i don’t have to install windows to get the info that he needs, as i have not used windows in couple years and i have trashed the windows recovery partition on my laptop (devilish grin)
keep safe peeps
Yes! it works for my laptop Acer 5601 AWLMi.
But,
It’s not perfect: i can’t hear sound coming from internet: I mean, in a video. Do you have another trick to solve it too ?
Bill,
What videos are you trying to play on the Internet? It could be a codec or software issue rather than a hardware one.
I’m running on Feisty now, with the ubuntu-restricted-extras package installed (and W32codecs), and everything I’ve found works well.
Videos on youtube for example.
With aslamixer, the PCM canal can’t be mute like the others.
I’m running with an installed knoppix. (yeah, i know, I can have a better one).
Do you have an idea ?
Bill,
What browser and version of Flash do you have installed? I have heard in the past that older flash versions (7 and earlier IIRC) had sound issues. I have the nonfree flash plugin (i.e. Flash 9) and firefox 2, and all is hunky dory. Especially on YouTube.
Hope That Helps
I tried with various browser but it does not come from here. I tried to install flash but i had problem with lib.

I do not know what to do. I first try to read how to use linux first
Hi
how do you get the nonfree flash plugin and how did you install it ?
I found, an install through Wine. But it did not seem to be correct.
Thanks.
:-/ I’m stupid.
I installed on my laptop the flash 7 and not the 9.
Now, it works, but if forced me to install it in .mozilla directory.
it works even i do not use mozilla browser.

Nelson,
I think, and I am no means an expert, that you do not have the kernel sources installed, which is what the error message is telling you. What distro are you using? I’m running Feisty now, and the Kernel that is in Feisty already supports this card! Feisty should be out in a couple of weeks, so it might be worth waiting & upgrading (if you are using ubuntu, that is!)
What about Ubuntu 7.04?? Does it works with Acer 5601??
Yes, Feisty works. I’m still working through the little things (for example, Webcam works without having to re-install kernal modules, but the card reader has stopped working) but all in all, it works better than ever!
I HAVE A PROPLEM WHEN I WANT TO INSTALL MY WEB CAMERA BUILT IN MY
COMPUTER ACER ASPIRE5601ANWLMI
THAT I CAN NOT INSTALL THIS CAMERA
