There has been a lot of coverage in the [mainstream] press over the last few days about E-petitions. I can summarise my opinion of them as such:
There are lots of them on the site. Some are serious, some not so serious, all will be fobbed off.
I know this is quite cynical of me, but my experience with all the ones I have signed (some serious, some not so serious) has been ‘Thanks for taking the time to sign, and here’s why we won’t be listening to what the petition says and we will carry on doing whatever we like.
Because I fully expect this type of response, I actually laughed out load when I got one particular response, to this petition : http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/JediKnights/ . The details of the petition (now closed) are as follows:
We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to recognise Jedi Knights as a religion on par with Christianity, Islam and other beliefs.
Details of petition:
The belief of Jedi Knights in ‘the Force’ is no more irrational than any other religious belief – but with less bigotry.
Now., this comes under the banner of ‘Not so Serious’ if you ask me. The response the signatories have got is this one : http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page11053.asp
The Government has no overarching role in regulating or recognising personal belief or faith. The UK has a long held commitment to freedom of worship and belief, and people are free to form religions and free to follow their own practices and beliefs provided they remain within the law.
May the Force be with you.
That last line had me creased up. Good to see someone has a sense of humour!
