Why should I run my own site?

I’ve been doing some tinkering on my site this morning, and I’ve just come to the realisation that I am now sure why I run my own domain any more. The only reason I can think of is to keep some sort of online identity.

I haven’t bloggied (apart from this, of course) in months. I use twitter instead, as most of what I want to say can be summarised in 140 Chars.

I don’t use any of the photo galleries I set up as Facebook/Flickr/Picasa all work so much better

Lugradio shut down a year ago (although I still get a lot of traffic on this)

I did run a site for my Mother-in-Law’s dance school, and I have just found out that it doesn’t even work anymore!

I need to either resolve to do more on the site or get shut. My problem is my attention span. For example, I have decided to re-do the dance school site. I have also decided to do it in django. I strongly suspect that this will go out of the window, as I’m looking after Hannah on my own for the first time in the afternoon/evening and I reckon this will re-shape my priorites. Again.

Variation On A Theme

There has been a meme recently regarding what software is installed on a system right after a clean install. I haven’t done a clean install for a year or so, and as such haven’t joined in. I have however, had a bit of a role move at work. I’m now more of a proper developer, so my choice of software is a little different to how it always used to be. So, in a variation of the meme, here’s the software I’ve installed, and will do in future if I need a clean install, to get my perfect development environment:

Apache, MySql, PHP. Cause I need them to develop.

ssh. we have things on lots of servers, and sometimes things we use require ssh tunnels. All made super-easy by clever use of ~/.ssh/config

Netbeans 6.5. Our main project at work is written in PHP, and I’ve not got a lot of experience in it, so I need help I’ve tried a lot of IDE’s in the last 4 months: Eclipse, Geany, Aptana & gedit, but Netbeans is the only one I have found that does everything I want it to, as well as being able to do Python (my language of choice) and Ruby[on rails] (one I am interested in learning)

xmlcopyeditor. We do a lot of work with XML, and this is a brilliant lightweight editor.

oXygen XML editor. For the times when xmlcopyeditor just won’t cut it

Git. We store our code on github, therefore I need git

Meld. Because rebasing is bad in git. It’s just easier to use this to compare 2 directories and merge changes across by hand.

Giggle. This is a GUI for git that makes it easy to track changes through different branches, commits and even drill down to file level. Is really useful for finding out when something specific was changed and by who, so you can find out why!

Terminator. Easier than screen.

Empathy. IM Client. we use google apps at work, including email, so jabber is needed. MSN is also needed for colleagues who will not move from it. It’s also nice to have personal accounts on there too. I switch regularly between this and pidgin, but empathy seems to use less resources.

giver. this is a new addition, and I love it because I really hate sending files via email, so when people demand their own copies of things rather than using google docs, it’s useful.

Not really one I install, but I use firefox all the time for development, docs, email etc etc etc

Finally, not one I installed, let alone on my machine, but well worthy of a mention is our new issue tracking system, which is an install of redmine

I would be very interested to hear how other people set up their work environments, either by comments or trackbacks.

I just finished coding this, so hopefully it will work!

As some folks know, Lisa’s operation is tomorrow. She’s going to be in hospital for a few days, and at home on bed rest for at least a couple of weeks, probably more. I thought it would be a nice thought if people wanted to send her messages, to all do it in the same place. As such, I introduce http://www.sheepeatingtaz.co.uk/lisa/ if you go to the site, and fill in the message and post it, all messages will go into the system. I will give Lisa the website address tomorrow when she comes round, and is starting to feel a bit lonely. I’m sure it will cheer her up if she gets messages from people.

Trigger’s Broom

My desktop computer has now been rebuilt! It is now going to be my mythTV server, and hopefully evolve into a ‘living room’ unit. The machine is already like Trigger’s Broom (people who aren’t fans of Only Fools and Horse should be ashamed, and can read up here). To the best of my recollection, it has had:

2 Motherboards
5 different sticks of RAM
3 Graphics Cards
2 Cases
6 Hard Drives
9 operating systems (including a phase where I was triple-booting for some reason)
5 Optical Drives (1 CD-ROM, 2 CD-RW, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 DVD-RW)

In fact, I think the only 2 original components are the floppy drive and the sound card! I’m not sure how long the current setup will last, as when I was rebuilding, I pulled the ground wire out of the connector for the power switch (from the front of the case to the motherboard). As a result, I now have to result to hotwiring the thing by holding the wire inside the connector and simultaneously pushing the power button to get it to boot!
