I have started having a play around with quickly (https://launchpad.net/quickly) today. I have always wanted to have a go at GUI programming — I’m OK at scripting and ‘web’ programming, but the only desktop GUI work I have done has been on windows in Access/VBA :S
Doing the basics seems fine, but I’m jumping straight in at the deep end! The situation I have at the moment is I have my Main window, and on opening it it opens a login window. What I am struggling with is passing data back to the main window from the login window.
So… does anyone know of any tutorials for python with glade? Everything google throws at me seems to be different to the way that quickly sets up the project, and makes them hard to follow. Is the quickly way standard? Should I abandon quickly, and go with one of the tutorials and start again from scratch?

So, I’m currently on holiday in a static caravan on Mablethorpe. It’s sort of an appetizer of a holiday before we go to Florida for a fortnight to see Lisa’s brother. There’s a couple of reasons for this holiday, one is to see how Hannah behaves staying away from home (early results are very promising – she doesn’t appear where she goes to sleep, as long as she gets fed!) The seond reason is that we really, really needed a break! We normally go to Spain, or the balearics, or somewhere equally sunny for a week at the beginning of September but this year we (specifically me) didn’t fancy flying with Hannah being only 3 months at the time.

So, initial impressions of the caravan are that it is nice. We’ve got a Gold level caravan, which is the highest this park offers (others in the chain off platinum) . To be honest, it’s just the right size. It’s like staying in a detached self catering apartment, which is brilliant when you have a nearly 5 month old how may cry at any point!

We had a nice day out in skegness yesterday, despite me having to run about 8 miles to put some more money in the car park, and then forgetting to take the car keys with me! Today we are going out for breakfast, then a walk to the bombing range/beach before making use of the free swimming pool before meeting my mum and dad in cleethorpes, Nd maybe all going out for tea. We have to check out by 10 in the morning, so not sure what we’ll do for the rest of the day.

I also need to take more photos, we haven’t really taken many of Hannah recently, and we forget how quickly she’s changing.

I’ve been doing some tinkering on my site this morning, and I’ve just come to the realisation that I am now sure why I run my own domain any more. The only reason I can think of is to keep some sort of online identity.

I haven’t bloggied (apart from this, of course) in months. I use twitter instead, as most of what I want to say can be summarised in 140 Chars.

I don’t use any of the photo galleries I set up as Facebook/Flickr/Picasa all work so much better

Lugradio shut down a year ago (although I still get a lot of traffic on this)

I did run a site for my Mother-in-Law’s dance school, and I have just found out that it doesn’t even work anymore!

I need to either resolve to do more on the site or get shut. My problem is my attention span. For example, I have decided to re-do the dance school site. I have also decided to do it in django. I strongly suspect that this will go out of the window, as I’m looking after Hannah on my own for the first time in the afternoon/evening and I reckon this will re-shape my priorites. Again.

I just finished coding this, so hopefully it will work!

As some folks know, Lisa’s operation is tomorrow. She’s going to be in hospital for a few days, and at home on bed rest for at least a couple of weeks, probably more. I thought it would be a nice thought if people wanted to send her messages, to all do it in the same place. As such, I introduce http://www.sheepeatingtaz.co.uk/lisa/ if you go to the site, and fill in the message and post it, all messages will go into the system. I will give Lisa the website address tomorrow when she comes round, and is starting to feel a bit lonely. I’m sure it will cheer her up if she gets messages from people.

Please, forward this link on to anyone who knows Lisa. I’ll also be posting the link on Facebook and twitter to try and get the word out!

My desktop computer has now been rebuilt! It is now going to be my mythTV server, and hopefully evolve into a ‘living room’ unit. The machine is already like Trigger’s Broom (people who aren’t fans of Only Fools and Horse should be ashamed, and can read up here). To the best of my recollection, it has had:

2 Motherboards

5 different sticks of RAM

3 Graphics Cards

2 Cases

6 Hard Drives

9 operating systems (including a phase where I was triple-booting for some reason)

5 Optical Drives (1 CD-ROM, 2 CD-RW, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 DVD-RW)

In fact, I think the only 2 original components are the floppy drive and the sound card! I’m not sure how long the current setup will last, as when I was rebuilding, I pulled the ground wire out of the connector for the power switch (from the front of the case to the motherboard). As a result, I now have to result to hotwiring the thing by holding the wire inside the connector and simultaneously pushing the power button to get it to boot!

All Fun & Games!

Lisa read my blog this morning, and noticed that I had not posted anything about what happened last week. The reason for this is because I didn’t think she’d want me to, but turns out, she does! Apologies in advance for any planet spam.

At 4am on Tuesday morning, Lisa woke up with incredible abdominal pains. She wouldn’t let me take her to hospital, in case ‘nothing was wrong’. Her being curled up on the floor unable to move didn’t inspire me to think ‘nothing was wrong’, but I digress. She did let me call NHS direct, and the guy on the end of the phone went through his symptom script, and couldn’t give a diagnosis. He arranged for one of the nurses to call us back. About 10 minutes later, the nurse rang, went through the same sript, and still couldn’t come to any diagnosis. She said she would get Lisa’s GP to call us.

About 20 minutes later, a local nurse called (not the GP) and advised to take a couple of whatever painkillers we had, and she would call back in an hour or so to see what effect they had had. The 2 500mg Ipruprofen had no effect whatsoever, so the same nurse came around to do an examination. The examination could not determine what was wrong, so she advised me to take Lisa to A&E.

Now, Goole Hospital no longer has an A&E department, so I was given the Choice of Hull Royal, or Scunthorpe, and given a letter to hand to the staff when I got there. We opted for Scunthorpe, and took off. On arrival at Scunthorpe, Lisa was then examined by the Triage nurse, and admitted to A&E, when the doctor suspected a twisted ovarian cyst, and diagnosed some Morphine. This was the first time Lisa had been able to stop crying for 3 hours. Fairly soon, she was admitted to a ward, and we were to wait for a non-A&E doctor to come and examine her. After another 4 hours, and several requests for more painkillers, a doctor arrived, and recommended an internal examination. This examination revealed nothing new, but did open up a couple of other possibilities: Kidney Stones or a Kidney Infection, and allowed Lisa to have some Painkillers.

A couple of days later, and Ultrasound scan was requested. The ultrasound revealed that there were no kidney stones, but the presence of a fairly large ovarian cyst (about 4×5x8cm). The cyst was not twisted or ruptured however, so the cause of the pain had been narrowed down to an infection. Antibiotics were produced, and the pain began to subside. As a result of this, Lisa was allowed home this weekend. She does have to go back to the Hospital (at Scunthorpe still) tomorrow, as she has an MRI scan scheduled (for ‘early in the week’) to check that there is nothing nasty (apart from the size of it) about the cyst. If not, she will be booked for an operation to remove it at Goole hospital in approximately 4-6 weeks.

And there we are, the full story so far.

They have both been extremely useful this last week. Lisa has been in hospital. Understandably, a lot of different people have wanted to be kept up to date. With Facebook & Twitter (Especially when using my mobile to update Twitter, which updates Facebook) I can text a quick update and anyone who uses these services is instantly up to date!

I’m going to try and get people set up with Twitter, as I really like the fact that you can recieve the updates via SMS as well as send them. I’m going to start using it more, not just for emergencies!!
